What I watched this week.....

I watch movies nearly every day of my life. I work in a video chain, so I can easily write it off as professional obligation, but honestly, I've always watched this many movies. I see the great ones I'm impatient for in the theater and the ones I missed, I watch on tape. There are also those that I have seen over and over and over and most of those I own. This section is about all of that. What did I watch this week and what did I think about it? Everything and anything. It averages out to almost a movie a day, sometimes more, depending on the mood and the calling to see something. Some movies you will find here again, yet I will still let you know what I watch, in case you missed it the time before that. The newer titles I won't go into too much detail on because I do that the week they are released. It is the older titles I will focus on, for movies you may have missed years ago when they were released originally. So if you want more details on a movie that is not on tape yet, I cannot give you that, until it is on tape, because the article I write is "This Week on Video."

The week of October 24-October 31
Arlington Road and Never Been Kissed (see review article Oct. 26). Mickey Blue Eyes: Some movies I watch because I feel I "have to." Some movies I know people will ask about when they come out, so I take the time and watch them. This movie was a cute comedy and no big surprises. There were some great laughs at this uptight British mans attempt to be "Mickey Blue Eyes," Kansas City gangster. I really like James Caan, so that helped. I don't care too much for Hugh Grant, but he was fine. This movie was produced by his longtime girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley. I'm a mobster movie junkie. As you will well find out, I watch Goodfellas and Casino in a regular rotation. This is a nice take off of those themes, just don't expect too much. Son of Sam: I don't actually like Spike Lee very much, but he always makes a DAMN GOOD movie. I thoroughly enjoyed his basketball strike commercials, too. Wild Wild West: I haven't heard anything good about this movie and I have to second those opinions. This movie had to cost many millions of dollars to create and it's hard to believe that no one could tell at that time what a turkey they had on their hands. I can't say it enough--WRITING, WRITING, WRITING. A movie without effects and a GREAT script can be far more enjoyable than an effects-heavy no-brainer, ex. Good Will Hunting. WWW is one of those that the curious will seek and they will be disappointed. I think the target audience is probably 8-12 year olds. It is truly a shame because Will Smith and Kevin Kline are capable of SO MUCH more. Better to check out Men in Black or Consenting Adults, than this sci-fi/western/dud. Elvira: Mistress of the Dark: This is such a campy movie, honestly I watched it for research for my Halloween costume. I LOVE Elvira, but like David Letterman, she isn't for everyone. You may want to scare this one us just for some laughs...'tis the season. I played Castlevania for Nintendo 64 for a few hours and it isn't a movie, but it certainly is one of my favorite ways to pass some movie watching time. Friday the 13th parts 1 and 2. What can I say? This time of year brings out the nostalgic need for a good scare and these classics do it so well. Don't miss a very young and upcoming Kevin Bacon in Part 1. Halloween The first and best and my favorite SCARY movie ever made. It is pre-slasher, pre-gore, just plain "it could happen" fun stuff. The theme song is one of my favorites as well. John Carpenter has always been one of my favorite movie makers...NO, DON'T mention that Vampires movie, OK?! That's it for this week...another week is coming, and another month too, and even a whole new time change! See ya in November!
