Theories, Facts, and Conjecture about the War on Terrorismsynonyms. Thomas Jefferson wrote, "I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever." I truly believe this is so. God, however, did not fly passenger jets into civilian targets: Terrorists did. Our careless trampling of third world nations, propping up of puppet governments, and selective enforcement of human rights abuses, all in the name of commerce, has helped create both a hatred of America and the conditions for terrorism. That explains a lot. It doesn't justify a damned thing. Face facts: We were brutally and offensively attacked. That leaves two options: Surrender or defense. While I normally try to avoid and condemn any sort of violence, in the face of such an attack we must fight back. The only question is how far to go in our defense. My opinion: Check with your ancestors - human sacrifices have never worked to appease the Gods. To combat a trans-national network of terrorists we need as broad a coalition as possible, including the moderate Arab states. Every bomb that drops weakens that coalition. To combat a non-governmental army that lives among civilian populations requires more use of the intelligence community, and small-unit special forces, and less use of traditional military. The overkill we are demonstrating risks the escalation of this event into a general war against all of Islam, which, coincidentally, is just what Osama bin Laden wants. I personally solute Barbara Lee for being the only Congressperson unwilling to abdicate her responsibility to review the policies of the White House. Just as explanation and justification are not synonyms, neither are justice and retaliation. I want justice. My opinion: I don't believe there's any conspiracy here, but there's certainly been some "security suggestions" that I find troubling. Personally, I'd rather live in a free country that has some dangers than in a maximum-security prison where I'm under a microscope.
