The Next Four Years - A Green Plan - Page 2

But at this point, talking about who that might be is putting the cart before the horse. At this point, we need to find not one candidate, but hundreds. We need to find any progressive who has ever considered a run for city hall, and get them set up to win as a Green. We need to recruit the left flank of the Reform Party, those disillusioned by Pat Buchanan's take-over, and register them as Greens.

Doing this will not only strengthen the party, to be sure that our next Presidential candidate (whenever that may be) does well, but will also demonstrate that we practice what we preach. Grassroots democracy and a bottom-up power structure are key elements of the Green message. We should not run another Presidential candidate until the elected base of the party is strong enough to turn out the support needed to guarantee a respectable showing.

By concentrating on our strengths we can show that the Green Party is not a fringe element. By taking over American politics town by town we can show that there is support for a new progressive movement. By showing that adherence to Green principals works to build healthy communities we achieve greater goals than taking five percent in a national election ever could.

Concentrating on electing an army of local officials, and creating Green success stories, is not simply good for the party, it is good for America.
