Anatomy of a Political SPAM Attack

the Heinz-Kerry's, donate to Tides, they are supporting all of these activities. It is not a means of laundering money to make anonymous donations to specific groups that Tides may support.

But how could the Heinz-Kerry's give to these radicals? Take a look at this: http://tidesfoundation.org/form_990.cfm - Click on the list of grants made in 2003. It will take a little while for all 27 pages to load, but once it does you find about 2,000 grants made that year.

If you take the time to read the list you'll find some groups that you don't like. You'll also probably find some that you do like, and may have even supported yourself. They're not all radical anti-Americans, unless the Metropolitan Opera Society is up to something new. Is the Friends for Youth mentoring program too radical for you? What about the Family Violence Prevention Fund; could they be a front for (gasp) feminists!?!?

Yes, there are few organizations listed that sound like they might be Arab and/or Muslim in nature. There's also an equal number (or greater) that are Jewish and/or pro-Israeli in nature. Tides has no special agenda in regards to the Middle East.

But what about the Barrio Warriors? The author points out that Tides used the Heinz-Kerry catsup fortune to fund this "radical Hispanic group whose primary goal is to return all of Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas to Mexico."

With a "primary goal" that important, you'd think it would be posted all over their web site. Instead, if you actually take the time to read their mission statement - http://www.barriowarriors.net/missionsta... - you'll see this instead:

"Purpose

  • Raise the social-cultural consciousness of Raza youth.
  • Develop the writing, analytical and organizing skills of young Raza.
  • Hold regular discussions/seminars center on Barrio unity, cultural pride and issues confronting Raza youth: for example police brutality, drugs, violence, problems in school etc.
  • Barrio Warriors staff will work on organizing issues identified as concerns of youth."

There's some more radical stuff there too, if you like. But it takes a certain amount of extrapolation to turn it into their "primary goal." By the way, you won't find the Barrio Warriors on Tides' list of 2003 grantees or on the 2001 list either; they got their one and only grant ($5,781) in 2002 and it wasn't renewed. Remember also: the email said that the Heinz-Kerrys gave to tides "between 1995-2001" - not even in the year that the Barrio Warriors got
