Carribean Theme Party: Ideas for Decorations, Food, and Accessories

Here are some fun ideas for a Caribbean-themed party.

Begin with invitations in the form of airplane tickets to the Caribbean. Request guests come dressed for the tropical weather and a relaxing evening. Pass out inexpensive shell or wooden bead necklaces to every guest as they arrive. Decorate the party scene with lots of flowers, real, plastic, or silk. They should be colorful, large, and as exotic-looking as possible.

Add bright colors in all your paper products including steamers and balloons. Play a nature CD with tropical song birds as background music. Use lots of tropical fruit such as pineapples, papayas, mangos, grapes etc. as part of the decorations especially for your buffet table. Make patterns by alternating rows of lemon, lime, and orange slices.

The main activities of this party are a buffet with authentic foods and a dance to wonderful Island music. Often CDs are available from the public library featuring the unique Caribbean sounds produced by tropical instruments. Stir up some fun with a conga line.

The menu should be as close to the real taste of the tropics as possible. Any good international cookbook will include at least a sampling of foods representative of the area. Prepare shrimp by sautéing it in olive oil, butter, garlic, and bourbon. Offer banana crepes, a spinach bed with sautéed plantains, a cucumber salad with red onion, a rice dish, or sweet potato chips with a guacamole type of dip. Of course, serve tropical fruit salad and tropical drinks.

You can make palm trees by stacking pineapples for the trunk and using paper leaves or a palm-like plant on top. You can add games, but this party is most successful when you just allow the atmosphere to provide relaxation and stimulate good talk. Don’t skimp on decorations, food, or music to create a memorable event.
