Veterans Day Theme Party

So often we forget the many possible party occasions that present themselves. Isn’t it time we celebrate something important as well as having fun. Why not start with Veteran’s Day on November 11th. We give so little thought to the men and women who served in the wars. We tend to forget that our country is only free because of all these courageous efforts. Everyday, men and women serve in our Armed forces and protect this nation. These are folks who should command our respect and receive our warmest thanks for the job they do. Your family probably has several members that served, let’s create a theme party to recognize these people.

Decorations are simple since you may already have brought out the red, white, and blue for July 4th. You may use some of the same types of things. Hang streamers, alternating the patriotic colors. Make giant stars of silver or dark blue to hang from the ceiling or grace your streamers. Many patriotic motifs may be used such as United States flags, eagles, the Liberty Bell, and individual service insignia for the different branches of the military.

Although Veteran’s Day is to celebrate the armistice ending World War 1, all your veterans need to be remembered. Personalize the celebration by adding personal documents, mementos, medals, photos etc. for your loved ones who served. Ask the honored guests to wear their uniforms if they can still get in them.

Serve these guest favorites as far as refreshments focusing on the colors red, white, and blue throughout the menu if possible. Be sure to at least serve up a cake or special dessert with a patriotic motif.

Allow plenty of time for swapping stories of wartime and military exploits. For us that are non-military, we often find these stories hard to listen to and hurry them along or seem bored and disinterested. Remember that the best conversationalist is the one who is a good listener. Your heroes deserve a time to be heard. Give them a time to explore their memories and listen with the respect that they deserve.

Make sure you have some fun activities planned. ‘Army games or toys’ for grownups could be a blast and give the needed relief if ‘memory walking’ gets too heavy. Trivial pursuit type games with battles and history might be the perfect test of knowledge. Remember to make any game theme appropriate, you must just rethink, rename and customize it to your needs. The amount of board games and video games with a military them are overwhelming.
