Start With A Box Costumes

For one of the simplest costumes possible, start with a box. When you think about the many costumes that could be made this way, it is amazing, some of us haven't yet done this costume.

Think of something that is basically a box shape and then go for it. You will need a hole for the head, the bottom could have a whole for the feet or be completely open and a place for the arms to come through. You might be able to hang the box by straps or something over the shoulders and then eliminate armholes. The head can stick our like arms and legs or the box could also cover the head and just include correctly spaced, large enough holes for the eyes to see through. Always keep danger in mind and err on the side of too much safety.

I have seen boxes turned into dice very easily. A good square box, painted with several coats of white spray paint is the base. Large dots of black felt can be hot glues or stapled on in the correct patterns. Use a saucer to trace the felt circles or paint them with black right onto the box. Underneath, wear a turtleneck and tights of black, white or a combination. You could make a statement by wearing a hat made up just for this costume, maybe something to match the dice or a hat with play dollar bills coming out of it.

The TV set is a fun one to do and easy. Dark gray spray paint or a primer will cover the box. You can be the star and make an old fashioned oval cut for the screen where your face is or you can wear the TV further down and insert a good magazine picture with plenty of action. Don't forget the dials. Hot glue Jar lids painted black onto the front below the screen. Make little marks for the knobs or add words such as off/on. Wear matching colors underneath. Add "Rabbit ears" for the antenna, using round metal curtain rods sprayed silver. Make two holes, push them through and hook them underneath with duct tape and maybe across the bottom of the antenna on the top of the box.

If you can find a round box and have good graphic skills you can make a can of something like Coke or cleanser. It can be made also by making a wire framework covered with fabric or shaped with paper mache'. I f you are duplicating a well -known product, study the graphics and colors well for authenticity.
