Diversity Theme PartyThis party can be as educational as it is fun. The theme may be adapted for any age group. It may require your guests to do a bit more work than some party themes, but the results are worth it. The hostess of the party can ether assign nationalities or the guest may pick themselves. Try to not let anyone duplicate for a good variety. The idea is for each guest to arrive dressed in a native costume from that country. There are tons of sources for costumes such as the library, the Internet, and possibly family or friends. Folks can keep the cost down and make it themselves. They may be able to borrow something. Costume shops may have more authentic looking costumes to rent if money is not an issue. Each guest should prepare and bring a food favored by their adopted nationality. Some of your guest may want to call on their own culture and dress accordingly, bringing a favorite ethnic food they serve in their family. Again, try to have a nice variety. Ask your guest to learn a couple things about the area and culture they choose. Some suggestions include a favorite saying of that nationality, what the main business, crop, or manufactured product of the place they have chosen, the names of a couple of cities, a few words in their language, and a well known landmark. All these items could be used to base games upon. A saying from their culture could be sprinkled liberally in their conversation. Used as a part of a story where certain people always say certain things when it is their turn makes for a very humorous activity. Knowing the main crop or product could be the basis for a charades- type game where they must act it out and others must guess it. A few words of the language could be part of a game where they guess what the words mean by figuring out the context of the sentence used. The landmarks could be part of a relay or moving game where dice is rolled with each guest goal their own landmark. You can choose decorations from the entire world. Why not hang up travel posters of exotic places and maps. The walls could be decorated with Mexican sombreros, Polynesian fishnets, and flags made to resemble those from many countries. Hang up piƱatas or tiny lights to represent streets or European cafes. Use Irish decorations, or Italian, add masks made or real from Africa and colorful South American or Mexican throws or ponchos. Keep colors bright. Use any item such as small replicas of the Eiffel tower, pagodas, or leaning tower of Pisa on tables. If you can find those very large oversized Mexican flowers or folded paper accessories that once were found at street fairs, they would be pretty. Look at the Salvation Army and Goodwill stores, garage sales, flea markets etc. for surprising finds. Use solid colored paper products in a mixture of vibrant colors.
