This party can be enjoyable no matter what time of year and how much or how little you wish to do. The perfect beach party will be held, where else, but on the beach on a hot summer night. This party is almost as much fun mid winter and inside. Those of us, with short summers who live in the Midwest, welcome anything that brings summer earlier when cabin fever is starting to set in.
Bring the beach indoors with actual sand in wading pools. Add striped towels, beach umbrellas and palm trees for a flavoring of summer. Everyone donning beach clothes and shades, even under their winter coats will set the mood. Add fragrance of suntan lotion to cotton handkerchiefs and put over lamps for the scent of the seashore. Add fishnets, waves of crepe paper streamers, and fish cutouts for the rest of the atmosphere.
Hot weather and a swimming beach nearby, just go to host party on the sand. Make sure you plan on a bonfire for atmosphere, and mosquito control. Tiki lamps are also a nice touch. Add all the other above elements for real theme continuity.
Outside party? The lake, or sea will provide the swimming activities needed for success. Water tag and 'pearl diving' add excitement to the swim time. Swimming relays and contests will be successful. Always keep safety in mind and the swimming expertise of your guests.
Inside, add pretend swimming relays, for games where the team members actually use their arms in swimming motions to reach their destination to retrieve the victim, legs can be tied to make reaching their goal more difficult. The game setting is the scene of a terrible ship sinking and the victims need you to save them. Use dolls for the victims. First team to bring all the victims back wins.
Use sand from wading pool to make sand castles. Can be an individual contest, where each competitor has a five minute limit to make the best castle possible.
Don't forget beach music and you are sure to have everyone singing along in no time.
A clambake will make this party a special treat.. There are many ways to prepare a clambake and most recipes books have some menus and techniques. Done in the sand on a bed of seaweed over hot coals or prepared in a steamer, the traditional clambake is delicious. You should also consider many places that cater the whole clambake or sell prepared clambakes you can do yourself. I've included some links for these folks and their mouthwatering menus.
