An Old Fashioned Scavenger Hunt

This party can be a tremendous amount of fun for any age. Teens and adults will love the 'hunt'. You can do this type of party with little ones if you supervise the search and have things placed in easy sight around your party location.

Like all parties, you need to send out invitations that give all the particulars of your party. This invitation could be shaped like a spyglass or a Sherlock Holme's hat.

The guests meet at your house for a rundown on rules and specifics and of course to receive the list of items to be gathered. Divide your guests into teams or couples depending on the number of guests and marital status of most of them. Little kids can search as individuals or with their best buddy. This party could include whole families teamed up against other families.

The list of items is the main point of the whole theme so you need to make it fun, interesting, challenging to find, but not impossible. For example if you ask for the President's autograph, that would be tough, but if you ask for one from a public official, that is easier. It could be a local magistrate, small town mayor or city councilman.

This party does not require costumes, although they could be worn, or caps, spyglasses given out. The guest should really be dressed appropriately in case some of the search is in places where they could get dirty or wet. Some of it will be outside so they need to also take the elements into consideration.

Party food can be served afterwards while everyone is sharing war stories about their prowess in obtaining difficult items. Warm weather could see a barbecue as the meal following the scavenger hunt. If weather is cold, a chili supper could be in order or homemade soup that simmered in a crock-pot, all day, so the host and hostess can play if they like. (Of course, they can't really win the prize.) Host and hostess can also just be involved in the part of the party when food is served and escapades revealed. Little children like typical party food.

Your decorations for the table can be anything you like since the theme is what it is, but something that adds to a detective look like Sherlock's pipe, hat, or spyglass, or maybe question marks would be fun. Use your imagination.

Make the prize special since the time period for this party can be hours or most of the whole day. A book or video of Sherlock Holmes, an attractive box in which to keep your 'booty' or found treasures. A book or movie about treasure hunting, shipwrecks, or pirates. Be creative in a prize choice.
