A NOAH'S ARK PARTY FOR COUPLES

A NOAH'S ARK PARTY FOR COUPLES BY Jo Ann Wentzel

This theme party is based on the bible story of Noah's Ark of course and might be an appropriate theme for church parties or in Christian homes. I see this as a couple's party.

Noah and his wife are the host and hostess. They should be dressed as all people were from biblical times. A bit of research in children's books, picture bibles, or online libraries should present a fairly accurate idea of what costumes look like. Other people in the family or those involved with planning may want to dress as other family members in the ark. Brush up on your bible story for details. The biblical costumes should be followed as faithfully as possible to give some reality to your party. These are simple costumes.

Other guests should be costumed as animals. Each couple will be assigned a species to become for your party. Assigning animals prevents an abundance of lions or elephants and no giraffes. Each couple will receive a name of an animal, with simple directions for these costumes.Let each person know this costume idea is just a suggestion for a simple representation of that animal. Costumes can be simple, elaborate, home made or store bought, or even rented. Guests may get much more creative and complicated in costume design as they wish. Animals are harder to make, but you may take tips from all those children's programs.

For animal costumes you want anything that looks reasonably like an animal's skin, coat, feathers, or scales etc. Use fake furs, burlaps, feathers of all kinds, old worn out leather items, even cotton batting can be useful. Shiny, satiny, or soft fuzzy material would be ideal in some cases. You are just looking for something to represent, not necessarily be exact. Masks could be worn, but it's easier to paint faces to compliment your costume. You can easily make ears, tails, and noses. Paint details, whiskers, spots etc.

Look for pictures of the ark, read the bible account, or research to get a feel for what the inside of the ark might look like. It was large, needing to accommodate all those animals and food for everyone. Anything that would give the impression of rough, wood walls such as brown paper, or burlap could be used.

Hay bales work for seating as well as to represent the animal's food. Create a manger to put loose hay into. Straw also will add the right atmosphere. Burlap or feed bags everywhere or a close representation of those would be fitting, but even more appropriate may be large baskets. Add dried parched corn or Indian corn as another touch, gourds, and stacked pumpkins. Primitive utensils and pottery could serve as the family's everyday equipment. Anything that looks old, items of clay would be a nice accent.
