Evil and good gardens can be portrayed by stereotypes, folklore and sculptures. We will start off with the purity, the beauty, and the awe of the Good garden. Making a Good Garden: Sweet and angelic, this garden is one of eden. The pure white blossoms fill the air with sweet scents. Some ideal flowers are: Flowers Crocus sativus var. cartwrightianus albus (White Saffron Crocus)
A pure white species that blooms in october. In ancient legend, the white saffron crocus growing on the slope of Mt. Parnassus - home of the Muses - was collected by Pythia, a priestess at the Oracle of Delphi. The Pythias would offer these blossoms to the gods as a sign of purity. Lilium candidum (Madonna Lily)
This delicate white bulb was used in biblical times. 15 fragrant, lily blooms fill a 6 inch stem. Delicate and graceful this rare flower is a treat for the Good garden. Lilies are said in folklore to be the purest flowers. One tale talks of a knight capturing and marrying a Lily, the purest of the flowers, only to find her wilting inside his castle. Other great ideas:
-Paeonia 'Festiva Maxima' (fragrant, pure white)
-Allium neapolitanum (freesia smelling, wards off bad insects)
-Erythronium californicum 'White Beauty' (shade, large blooms)
-Narcissus 'Polar Ice' (white shining quality)
-Iris 'Immortality' (reblooming, easy Iris)
Shrubs, ground covers, and herbs Foliage can also be used to compliment such pure blossoms. Silver foliage can be a great shade for a Good Garden. Silvery tones can make this garden look mysterious and elegant. Here are some great ideas of silvery foliage: Artemisia
This huge genus of aromatic herbs and small shrubs has silver foliage and durability.
-'Silver Brocade' loves scorching heat and glows and dusk.
-A. albula 'Silver King' is one of the showiest and great for the Southwest.
-A. absinthium is used for Abinsinth, it flows through the garden with silky-white segmented leaves. When made into a tea and sprayed on plants it deters slugs.
-A. dracunculus a herb commonly called tarragon has many uses as a seasoning.
Lamium 'White Nancy'
Attractive silver-gray leaves edged in a greenish gray. Great foliage for the summer in colder climates. In Southern states Lamium can last through mild winters. Lovely, delicate white flowers bloom in June and July. A lovely rapid grower that is not invasive Angelica archangelica
A large plant with broad-toothed leaves, that is the angel of the herbs. Its licorice-flavored flower stems can candy. The leaves can be used in salads. Angelica archangelica can grow to 6 feet in 2 years. It loves cold and moistness, and can't tolerate hot summers. The perfect "good herb".
