In honor of Black History Month, Suite 101 Theatre continues its look around the Net at a number of sites devoted to African-American theatre, its creators, performers, and historians. (This is by no means intended to be a fully comprehensive survey, and the omission of a site is no reflection of its quality or value.) Two of the largest sites devoted to aspects of African-American theatre were created by individuals. Wallace Bridges' ambitious African American Theatre site is a treasury of biographies and data about well-known African-American writers, dramatists and performers. With internal site links you step between pages with very brief data and pages with far more complex and thorough information, from biographical chronologies to criticism to bibliographies. He also maintains a short list of links to the major African-American Theatre companies (at least those who have active web sites) as well as links to a number of other sites pertaining to the subject of African-American theatre. Angela Weaver dedicates her site, Women of Color, Women of Words/African-American Playwrights, to a short list of African-American women who have exerted a strong influence on the theatre world. From Vinnette Carroll through Lorraine Hansberry to Anna Deavere Smith, the site contains biographical information, play excerpts, and extremely in-depth bibliographical information about its subjects and the overall topic of African-American theatre. Ms. Weaver also provides a more extensive list of theatres with a continued involvement in theatre by, about, and/or for African-Americans. You'll find few theatre sites on the net that demonstrate this depth of research. C U @ the theatre -- go see a show! Go To Page: 1
