The Regions - Paper Mill Playhouse

We continue our series of visits to the web sites of major regional theatres. This week:

Paper Mill Playhouse

In 1934 a friendship between artist/playwright Antoinette Scudder and actor/director Frank Carrington resulted in the founding of the Paper Mill Playhouse in an abandoned mill built in 1795. The Playhouse was one of the earliest proponents of the regional theatre and has been celebrated for its excellence with numerous awards including being named "Distinguished Arts Organization" by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for twelve consecutive years and, fairly unique for a theatre, a number of Emmy awards and nominations. In addition, many of their productions have moved to Broadway and other major theatres. Led by Executive Producer Angelo Del Rossi (since the death of Frank Carrington in 1975) and Artistic Director Robert Johanson (since 1985) the Playhouse has been the home of countless distinguished productions and noteworthy revivals of classic theatre works, as well as new works developed through their Musical Theatre Project. The Playhouse is heavily involved in outreach and education programs as wells as hosting internships and training programs.

Their 1999/2000 season illustrates what the Playhouse excels at, including large scale revivals of Mame, The Student Prince, Rags, Noises Off, Deathtrap, and Pippin.

The Paper Mill Playhouse's website is an exercise in clarity. Their main menu, to be found in the left hand frame, will direct you to the sites subsections, which include detailed information about pretty much whatever you'd be looking for. You can find directions to the theatre (from any directions); info on their concessions, services, restaurant, gift shop and art gallery; casting notices; photos of productions and events; backstage tours; details about their production facilities; info on donating and their outreach and education programs; etc. Tickets may be purchased online (securely, through the Tickets.com service), but you'll have to make a phone call for a season subscription.
