We continue our series of visits to the web sites of major
regional theatres. This week: Pioneer Theatre CompanyFor thirty-eight years, the Pioneer Theatre Company has made its home on the campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, becoming a fully professional LORT theatre in the 1980's. The theatre building, the Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre is a replica of the Salt Lake Theatre, which was built in 1861 and torn down in 1928. At that time, it was "nationally regarded as one of three or four great historic American stages." The current version of the building houses two theatres: the Babcock Theatre and the Lees Main Stage. Their 1999/2000 provides a good mixture of old and new, classic and classic-wannabe, starting in September with the Sondheim/Gelbart A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and continuing with As You Like It, Steve Martin's Picasso at the Lapin Agile, The Cripple of Inishmaan, A View from the Bridge, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead, and Big River. The Pioneer Theatre Company website is obviously new and underconstruction. Their interface is clean and direct, with the home page offering three pull-down menus that provide instant navigation to all parts of the site. Much information is yet to come (the history pages are merely links to entries in the Utah Encyclopedia), but you'll find much to interest you, including details about the season-- a terrific "tab"-based link setup for each show with details and essays about each, a newsletter featuring director's notes, cast lists featuring photos and bios, and production photos -- about their education and outreach programs, group sales, maps, etc. Currently tickets are available only by phone or at the box office, although the site does make mention of plans for a secure online ticket purchasing system "soon."
