The RegionsWe return to our series of visits to the web sites of major
regional theatres. This week: The Coconut Grove PlayhouseIn facilities that were originally built as a movie theatre and which during World War II house an Air Force training school, the Coconut Grove Playhouse of Miami, Florida, entered its current existence as one of this country's leading regional theatres with the American premier of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot in 1956. The Playhouse has housed productions that featured some of the most recognizable names in show business, including Tallulah Bankhead (she's performed in every theatre, hasn't she), Henry Fonda, Ethel Merman, George C. Scott, E.G. Marshall, Elliot Gould, Liza Minnelli, Alan Alda, Anthony Perkins, Shelley Winters, Eli Wallach, Mickey Rooney, Charlton Heston, Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn. Under current artistic director Arnold Mittelman, the theatre is dedicated to new examinations of classic works as well as brand new theatre, many of which explore "a wide range of multi-cultural works that reflect the rich diversity of Miami's population." The theatre's facilities include the Arthur F. and Alice E. Mainstage Theatre and the intimate Encore Room Theatre. Their 1999-2000 season features a mixture of old and new, musical and legit, and especially adaptations, opening with Finian's Rainbow, and including Luis Santeiro's Mixed Blessings: The Millennium Begins (a sequel to a successful contemporary adaptation of Moliere's Tartuffe), Lloyd Webber/Don Black's Song and Dance, the Goetz's The Heiress (the adaptation of Henry James' novel, Washington Square), Edward Gallardo's Carmen Libre (adapted from the Bizet and reset in Cuba), and Lies and Legends (based on, or one could say adapted, from the songs of Harry Chapin). Their website is attractive -- with a faux-oil paint motif -- and informative, although you may find you need to wade through their "Contents" page to find the information you're looking for. Previous regional theatre views: C U @ the Theatre!
