The Bread BowlYou guys know by now that I love bread. Maybe it's a carb thing. But I love bread so much that I even wrote a Suite course about it (nice shameless plug, don't you think?) I also love finding new Web sites about people who share my passion for the floury arts. And I've seen a ton of sites having to do with bread, from muffins to tortillas to artisan breads and everything in between. But I came across a new (to me) site the other day that I just had to share with those of you who are still eating bread these days. It's the Unofficial Global Internet Bread Recipe Archive, which is just about what it sounds like. This site is like a worldwide bread recipe swap. It's got everything from Bjorn's Norwegian bread, which sounds more like a conversation than a recipe, to Soda Pop bread, which doesn't sound any less insane when you read the recipe (and makes you wonder when the folks who organized this site put it in the "traditional breads" category -- but I guess that's traditional as opposed to bread-machine recipes, which are a separate section). There's Amish Friendship Bread, which takes 10 days to make, brown bread, vegan semolina bread, Wheat-free chocolate biscuits and on and on. I cannot even begin to express the wide variety of recipes that are available on this site. It's basically just a one-page list of titles you click on to view recipes. There's no rating mechanism or user comments, but these recipes all come from people who love to bake and want to share their recipes with others, so one can guess they're all tried and true. There is a message board with places for people to leave comments and make requests, but it doesn't seem to be frequently visited. There's also a pretty good collection of other bread resources if you can't find what you're looking for on this site. But the bottom line is, whatever kind of bread you envision, there is probably a recipe for it on this site. Especially if your tastes run to the exotic or multicultural. This is a great site to go to when you're looking for something new to treat your family. I don't mean to get off on my usual "baking is good" rant, but, hey, baking is good. It's one of the few quick, easy, affordable, big wow things you can do your family that lets them know you love them and also should help you reduce stress and get to be creative all at the same time. It's great to do with the kids and fun to do by yourself, too. What could be better than that? Happy baking!
