Saute Wednesday

Continuing our days of the week trend (begun in December with Meatless Monday and continued last month with Tasty Tuesday this month we're exploring Saute Wednesday, perhaps the only food site with Wednesday in the title (the only one I've ever heard of, anyway).

This site is different from most of the ones I've reviewed before. It isn't sponsored by a major company or organization; it doesn't even offer its own recipe section.

This site is a blog, or Web log, for those of you less tecnologically minded. It's mostly a collection of links to other places, but what a great collection it is!

The main part of the page features the blog of Bruce Cole. He periodically publishes he thoughts about food, from cheese to salt to some of the "favorite things" of foodies everywhere. These items often link to other people's stories about similar topics.

And its the links that really make this site shine. Look along the left-hand side of the page for an array of categories available for your browsing pleasure. It begins with an alphabetical list of newspaper food sections (just click on the header to get a drop-down list) from the Anchorage Daily News to the Washington Post. A few international sections are listed, too. This section is worth the price of admission in itself.

But this site has a lot more to offer. There are links to food professionals, chefs, food magazines and food sites, all nicely organized in these cool drop-down menus. Want to know about Japanese cuisine or the writings of MKF Fisher? Maybe you want to know about sustainable cuisine or food science. It's all here.

If you live in a big city or are planning to travel soon, there are links to dining guides including Michelin, Zagat and many guides presented by local newspapers.

There are links to other blogs, which such intriguing titles as The Muching Muse and Sir Lunch A Lot, Vittles Vamp and The Joy of Soup. If you're obsessive about a type of food, you're likely to find a blog here that will give you more information than you ever wanted to know about it.

And, of course, there are links to sites on wine and recipes, from Martha Stewart and the Mayo Clinic to the National Honey Board and Pasta Improvvisata. A great place for endlessly browsing for some new recipes to try.

There are links toward the bottom of the page that go directly to articles on different subjects, from a profile of quick-cooking diva Rachael Ray to information on microwaving lobsters (no kidding!) There are links to cookbook reviews (and publisher's sites for cookbooks), a guide to mad cow disease, an archive and more.
