Going Meatless

Those of you who've read my column for a while know I'm an advocate for eating less meat. I'm not a vegetarian, but it's been about a year since I cut beef and pork from my diet. I usually eat like a vegetarian during the week and only eat meat once or twice on the weekend.

Now that it's almost resolution time, I thought I'd point you to a site that would at least get you thinking a little more about going meatless: Meatless Monday.

This is a really colorful, lively and informative site put out by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. As such, it approaches vegetarianism from a health standpoint rather than an ethical or political one.

The site contends that eliminating meat from your diet one day a week will limit your consumption of saturated fat by 15 percent. This relatively simple change can start you down the road to eating healthier and helping to prevent heart disease, stroke and cancer.

The site includes a collection of recipes of the week organized around a theme (from office parties to Earth Day, picnics, farmer's market food and more). Find the archive by clicking on a recipe from the home page and you'll see a list of old features. There's no search, but it's kind of fun to browse (check out Capturing the Best Recipes on Film for food inspired by movies).

My other complaint is that once you pick one of the old features to look at, all the archived recipes are in the same window. I guess that makes it easier to browse, but don't hit print!

The site has an amazing collection of links from sponsors (click on recipes on the left hand side for a huge list of other recipe sources) including contests, quizzes, games, freebies and discounts. There are links to sites for kids, from the educational (a kids' food pyramid) to the fun (and also educational).

It also provides healthy eating tips "Beyond Monday," including eating lean meats, lots of fruit, vegetables and whole grains, exersiging daily and keeping away from smokers (with yet more links to help with all these goals).

You can also sign up for a newsletter to get the weekly recipes, and you can join the campaign to spread the idea of Meatless Monday across the country.

The bottom line is, this is a good site to lead you to other sites about health and nutrition. Better yet, it's a really good idea. So, check out the site, think about going meatless, and happy eating!
