Storytelling in the Holidays

© James Foster Robinson

The Holidays are here! Christmas, Boxing Day, New Years, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Kwanzaa and Dwali - Festivals of Lights! People of many faiths worldwide will be celebrating the season as a time of hope and sharing. And the children will be all excited! Many different kinds of gifts will be exchanged but there is one gift that you can give and keep on giving - Storytelling!

But what story should you tell? If you are of a religious faith, You can choose one from those in your faith. If you are Jewish you could tell the Hanukkah story of the small flask of oil that lit the temple for eight days. If you are a Christian, you could tell the story of the virgin birth of Christ. Muslims could tell stories from the Quran and Hindus could tell of tales from Dwali. But is there another type of story that anyone could tell in the holidays?

There is one tradition that in recent years has come to be accepted worldwide much to the delight of children. It is the tradition of Santa Claus and Christmas. Thought it started out as a pagan belief in Europe, it has transformed into a Christian tradition and then into the Santa Claus we know today. Santa's Christmas Eve's journey to bring presents to all the good boys and girls worldwide. There are many stories about Santa Claus and Christmas that are not of any one faith that you can tell. You can always tell them stories about your favorite childhood Christmas. Or you could make up your own story. If that is not your style, then check a few Christmas books out from your library and see if there are any stories there you could tell in your own words.
