Horror, Dark Fantasy, and Gothic Games

Though not a very popular genre of MU**s, horror, dark fantasy, and gothic games are plentiful enough to provide a diverse selection of frightening worlds for highly entertaining—if rather spooky—play. One such game, Nightscape, is set in a “dark supernatural future”, and the opening graphic on their web site certainly paints a chilling picture. Nightscape is primarily a roleplaying game, set in post-apocalyptic San Francisco, in the year 2091 AD. In the game setting, the world has been ravaged by demons and war, plunging once-organised countries into anarchy and utter chaos. With time to breed and gather strength, new races with supernatural powers have arisen, races like mutants, vampires, lycanthropes, fae, and even angels…all sharing the same space once occupied solely by humans. Humans who were, perhaps, incredibly naïve to imagine they were the most intelligent and powerful of creatures on Earth. Magic and might abound in Nightscape, blending traditional fantasy concepts with wild science fiction, and producing a stunning array of twisted fiction and superb roleplay opportunities. Nightscape, based in the USA and in English, does not permit player killing, saves equipment, has an all-original world, is primarily adult-oriented, and averages 25-49 players. To play Nightscape visit their web site at http://www.nightscapemux.com/ , or find more information at their Mud Connector listing. Another game is Pathologicus, based on the premise of Earth being invaded by extraterrestrial life forms, who completely re-shaped life on Earth with their knowledge, technology, and customs. In the Pathologicus history, wars erupted around the globe as humans and aliens struggle for survival and power. Dimensional rifts were opened by the combination of intense magic, used by humans, and devastating technology, used by aliens. Portals to other planes were created, and supernatural creatures filtered through to Earth, as well as humans being mutated by the forces. With that history as background, Pathologicus is set a century after the great wars. Descendants of the supernatural beings, extra terrestrials, mutants, and humans co-exist relatively peacefully, but the dimensional rifts remain unsealed—adding an element of global threat beyond racial wars and territorial conflict. In Pathologicus, you can play a brutish barbarian, a sophisticated commando, a sadistic death knight, a mystic warrior, an extradimensional necromorph, a pious priest, a noble psiknight, a mechanical reaver, a rough n’ tumble rider, a stealthy rogue, a shapeshifter, a fierce alien sokullan, a spellcasting sorcerer, or a technomage. Certainly a wealth of imaginative classes—something for everyone!
