Dina's Top 10 MU*-Related Reasons to be Thankful (in no particular order)

1. That a couple years ago I stumbled upon Cardea ( http://www.cardea-rpg.com ), the MUD which I now help to develop. Truly the Cardea admin team is one of the most talented groups of people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Cardea's players are patient, reasonable, creative, and fine roleplayers. I couldn't ask for a better world to help create.

2. That last May I stumbled upon Suite101.com (thanks to ierne!) and was able to create this topic, Online Multiuser Text Games. It's been a great deal of fun, very rewarding work, and here's to a long & successful future here at the Suite.

3. That I have a wonderful, supportive family who are not at all frightened of RPGs or MU*s, and who are understanding when there are days I just want to disappear into the world of gaming. And, that they'll even let me tell them stories about things that happen in various MU*s-and though they probably don't understand a word of it, they'll nod and smile and make me feel like they care about my rambling!

4. That I live in an area with a fabulous inexpensive ISP nearby, which delivers the promised 56k connection, unlike every other ISP I've ever had that promised and never delivered. And, that said ISP will only disconnect me every 12 hours, and not every 2, like many free ISPs.

5. I am thankful beyond measure that I met my best friend on a MU*, and that over the past few years, we've gotten to know each other face-to-face and establish a precious friendship. Had I never taken the plunge from pen & paper, dice rolling type games to the world of MU*s (an intimidating step!), I'd have never have come to know him. If anything, MU*s are worth their weight in gold for this.

6. That I have grown as a writer of both fiction and nonfiction from my involvement with MU*s. My creative writing has been bolstered by the work I do for Cardea, and this has stimulated my imagination in wild ways. My expository writing skills have been exercised by the work I do here at the Suite, and since I'm no longer writing those dreaded college papers, it's darned good to keep in shape.

7. That I stuck with courses in C, even though it was so unbelievably painful, so that I could learn-albeit shakily-the basics of MU* coding. It's given me a broader perspective on game development, and a new respect for the people who spend years of their life coding MU*s and dreaming of turning all the little { and
