The Renaissance comes to life in Games of Intrigue

Games of Intrigue, located at http://www.lunula.com/intrigue , has attempted to do what few other online multiuser text games have endeavoured to do before: to create a world that fairly and accurately represents the atmosphere of the European Renaissance, blended with a dose of fantasy.

The game is set upon an island named "Tilana," located off the British isles, in the 15th century. "Intrigue" isn't just the name of the game, it's a major theme. Politics, historical play, manipulations and machinations are the order of the day in Tilana's major city, Tevera. Everything from religion to justice to warfare and power playing comes to light in Tevera, offering a wealth of roleplay and strategy opportunities.

Some points of interest about Games of Intrigue are:

  • A highly developed, incredibly detailed Royal Family tree
  • Calendar festivals for religious celebrations (such as The Feast of Games and The Feast of Fire)
  • Archives of rumours that circulate from year to year, which have effect upon or may be a direct result of game plot. These make a great read, even if you were not present for the actual events described!

The geography and layout of the game world was obviously given great thought by the game's creators. The five counties within the kingdom of Tilana are diverse, each having its own strengths and weaknesses. This gives rise to potential for trade, as well, which encourages yet more strategy and planning.

A rich history offsets the action of the present, in the kingdom of Tilana. Depending on the county you examine, everything from the romance and adventure of piracy; the culture of cosmopolitan life; the security of farming, hunting and gathering; and the threat and ravages of warfare bless and plague the land. Just as the real life Renaissance was a time of expansion, revolution in thought, government, and religion, the world of Tilana is a multi-faceted, ever-growing place with a splendid background and a bright (if somewhat tumultuous) future.

The game's web site offers several useful maps, and who amongst MU* players hasn't come to appreciate-and perhaps practice-a good bit of cartography! A map with the basic layout of the isle of Tilana is located at http://www.lunula.com/intrigue/images/co... , and gives potential players a good idea of the size and scope of the land.

Games of Intrigue is a MUX, and like most MUX games, can be difficult for those completely new to MU*s. If you've not played a MU* before, allow yourself a few hours to test your fingers and toes with the MUX character creation system, which can be unbelievably-and oft overwhelmingly-detailed. If you are experienced at playing MUX games, however, you will find Games of Intrigue's interface and various systems quite familiar...with, of course, an early 15th century spin!
