"TEXANS IN THE NEWS"--AN INTERVIEW WITH LEE SOUCY (PART I)

PLAINVIEW--Recent events in our nation today (especially in light of the Sept. 11th attack) have prompted a major surge and renewed interest in patriotism and loyalty to our country and a desire to go back to the former values our nation once had. And unfortunately, by necessity, it has even prompted us to go to war to defend those values. But lest we forget, we should heed wisely in recalling King Solomon's admonition to us in Ecclesiastes that "there is nothing new under the sun...What has been done will be done again..."

War, like it or not, is nothing new to humanity--in fact, since the Garden of Eden, there were also probably wars that were just as bloody and painful to fight as the war we are currently in now. But is there anything that we might need to learn from the past on this subject to apply to the current situation that we are facing? And is this truly a new thing--or just possibly a reconstituted version of the same old thing just packaged in a different form?

We thought that for the next few weeks we'd take a unique opportunity to look back at a time in our nation's recent past from someone who was there at another pivotal point in America's history. We do just that through the voice of Mr. Lee Soucy. Mr. Soucy, if you saw him personally, is not exactly a man who lacks for words on this subject. In fact, when it comes to World War II and especially the subject of Pearl Harbor, here in the Plainview area he has obviously been found to be highly in demand to speak at various local functions. He has also generously given that same opinion to various authors and publishers who write on topics related to World War II. One might therefore say that he might be pretty well-qualified to say a thing or two when it comes to the subject of war and its effects on an individual person as well as a nation.

Mr. Soucy and his wife, Peggy, are also both active members of St. Mark's Episcopal Church here in Plainview and have even each served in various capacities of St. Mark's. The Soucys, even in their years of semi-retirement, also run a modest dog-obedience school operation here in Plainview and are highly regarded members of the community here.
