TALES FROM THE WEST TEXAS DUST

LONE STAR ROAD REPORT--CONFUSED IN COLORADO CITY

COLORADO CITY (Special)-- Howdy once again from the road! Once again, we here at the Suite give you yet another view from another part of Texas--THIS TIME from Colorado City (population approximately 4,100). For those of you not aware of exactly where Colorado City is, just look on a map in West Texas on I-20. First, find where Big Spring is. Then after you're done doing that, find Abilene on the map. Take both fingers and slide them down I- 20 until they meet, with the finger that you stuck on Abilene going more to the west than the other finger that's on Big Spring going east. And you'll probably find that the point where those two fingers meet is about where Colorado City's located. (Please note that the proper pronunciation of the Colorado part of Colorado City used around here is "colla-RAY-do"--NOT "collar-rah-do."

"What, pray tell," you're probably asking me right now in your head, "would you be doing again in someplace like Colorado City?" If you have been a frequent reader, though, of this forum, I wonder if you should be really asking me that type of question again. My answer? Yep, I went on yet another prison crusade again.

Anyway, I landed here somewhere around 2:45 A.M.--thanks in part to a Greyhound bus driver who was gracious enough to drop me off right at a major exit off I-20 that just happens to be only three blocks from the Days Inn--Colorado City (2303 N. Highway 208; (915) 728-2638). To say the least, the sight of that sign (even with several pieces of heavy luggage) was quite welcome to me once I got into town (especially since the others in my group were also staying there, too).

Here in Colorado City, out of the three main hotels in town, the Days Inn may be the most expensive of them, but also the best value available. $48/night (including taxes) at least got me a decent room here, a friendly and helpful staff, and several different types of cereal (including Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Lucky Charms, of all things), as well as orange juice, coffee, and milk. Sorry, though, folks, no donuts or anything else like that (unfortunately, one thing that Colorado City does not have is a bakery of any kind--so the Days Inn folks try to do what they can within their limitations). But, if you might be a little bit transportationally challenged (like I am), the good folks there could be convinced for a small tip to take you wherever you might need to go around town. And, with several convienence stores and restaurants just a very short walk
