LONE STAR ROAD REPORT--LOST AS A SNOWGOOSE IN BARTON SPRINGS (AN AUSTIN TRAVELOGUE)

[LIVE, ON-SCENE REPORT]

AUSTIN (Special): I will have to admit that I was deceived when I first came here for the very short trip that I was here for. After riding all night on a bus from my homebase in Plainview all the way south to Kerrville, then spending a three-hour layover at the bus station in Kerrville (in which I'm now glad I took advantage of the free extended ride to Kerrville INSTEAD of getting off in Fredericksburg at the bowling alley which offered NOTHING in terms of amenities-- whereas the one in Kerrville did at least have a thing or two that I could purchase and eat....), and then east into town. Little did I know that a city like this is a town where you might find some very deceptive surprizes...i.e., things that seem good on the surface that might actually be bad and also cases that lean towards the vice versa...

But another thing that seems more prevalent here than anything else from the get-go immediately after I got my bags and left the Greyhound bus station was this--I continually got the feeling a good bit of the time that I was about as lost as a snowgoose in the middle of a desert. The longer I stayed here, the worse that feeling got. Apparently, I'm not the only one who shares this weird view. It seems that the natives here also feel a little bit the same way.

Just cut yourself some slack, presume that you will be lost half the time, do what you can to acclimate yourself to the surroundings here, and don't work yourself in a tizzy over it if you can't do things the way you want. Austin seems to be a town that prefers that it demands things from you and your time--and YOU bend to it, NOT the other way around.

I partly came down here to make up for the trip that I could have taken (but didn't) when I was in junior college. I was a member of the Student Government at South Plains College=-- and as such, I had an opportunity to come here many years earlier as a part of that group. Unfortunately (at least as
