TEXAS ARTISTS SERIES: A MAINES BROTHERS BAND AND MAINES FAMILY RETROSPECTIVE (PART III)

We now rejoin our retrospective series already in progress with Part III of our MBB/Maines Family interview:

101: Now I wish to shift the focus a little closer to the present day. First, I know that the Maines family has been a major supporter of many Lubbock-area causes. But the one that strikes home for me most personally is your support of South Plains College and its commercial music program. Your band has not only made numerous appearances there, but also the entire family has stood behind SPC in the area of scholarships and financial support. What is your family's rationale for supporting SPC and why your interest in it?

101: (ALL) While we're on the subject of causes, I'm curious about the other things that you stand behind. I know, for instance, that Kenny and Sharon have both been avid and outfront spokespersons for the Texas Boys Ranch as well as other important civic endeavors within the Lubbock area. Tell us a bit more as well on how your family (and also the rest of you in the band) has specifically determined the causes that your family supports and why you all feel it is important to do so.

C. Banks: We have always been very community-oriented. This is where we live; this is the folks that we live with; this is the folks that we deal with daily; this is the folks that we love; this is the country that we love. Kenny and I have both been inovlved for a number of years helping the Lubbock Neighborhood House organization raise money annually. And I know that Steve and Donnie and Lloyd and Kenny and Jerry are involved with several different aspects. It's hard to turn people down--sometimes you just have to do what you can given the time that you have. But very seldom does anybody call--if we can at all possibly help raise money for a cause, lend our name to a cause, and be supportive--we want to jump in there and help.

S. Maines: I think the other thing that we all do that I particularly enjoy doing is the involvement with our kids and being parents. Besides helping out with community activities, I think we try to play a big role in the lives of our children even though they're growing up and they're not kids anymore...but just finding ways to help with PTA or Booster Clubs or whatever else and doing our part.
