Scott also publicly thanked those present for their prayers and support during the crisis and its aftermath on behalf of all of the families affected by Columbine. He also remarked that the shooting didn't start on April 20th--but instead long before that in the worldviews and hearts of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. He cited the example of when he saw the videotapes that Eric and Dylan had made two months before when they talked about "...starting a chain reaction"--a statement chillingly and hauntingly similiar to one Rachel had made in challenging her classmates in an assignment to "...start a chain reaction with acts of kindness"--that the elder Scott feels that it has made this generation more clearly see "...how we galvanize in this generation the evil and good. It's time for us to make a decision; it's time for us to come out of the closet." Scott also noted in the tapes that Eric and Dylan had made that the two boys blasted Christianity and had even mentioned Rachel by name as a specific target of their future attack.
Later in the presentation, Scott, in the midst of reading one of the entries of Rachel's diary, posed a question in the minds of conference participants by saying, "...Rachel prayed a prayer--she said, "God, I want you to use me to reach the unreached." How many of you ever prayed prayers and God answered those prayers--but he didn't answer them the way you thought He should answer them?" Scott illustrated the point by noting what he felt the ways that God provides patience and then told participants something that a good friend who had an impact on his life had told him, "Darrell, learn how to be a see-througher and not a look-ater...If you don't become a see-througher, if you are a look-ater, you are going to live in defeat and frustration in your Christian walk. But if you will learn to see through things to the reality that's behind this world, you will live in fruitfulness and you will never, ever see anything except what's behind the visage."--something that would prove to be helpful in dealing with the aftermath of the Columbine tragedy.
