TALES FROM THE WEST TEXAS DUST--LONE STAR ROAD REPORT

WORLDVIEW WEEKEND SPECIAL FEATURE (PART I)--THE TEARS OF COLUMBINE

AMARILLO--We continue our special report this week from the Worldview Weekend Conference with what probably was its biggest capstone highlight--the time when Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, one of the fatalities of the tragedy that occurred last year at Columbine High School in Littleton, CO, shared his heart with conference participants about the experiences he and his family have went through.

It is amazing to note that the anniversary of the shooting will occur in just a little more than two weeks from now--and one would naturally think that a father like Mr. Scott would have just reasons to be bitter and resentful about what happened. But apparently Mr. Scott feels otherwise and prefers to express what might be to some very totally different and radical statements about the reasons for his daughter's death.

To illustrate how people these days might recall the Columbine tragedy, Scott asked for the number of participants who remembered what they were doing when the assasination of President John F. Kennedy occurred. "...If you asked them what they were doing on November 22, 1963, they can tell you because something happened that caused the clock to stop and for time to stand still...This [the Columbine tragedy] was the equivalent to this generation...to the John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King assasinations of my generation." He also emphasized his view that the Columbine tragedy was a spiritual event--one that he was forced to live through personally.

Scott also related the memory he had of when he was caught in the massive traffic jam towards an elementary school in which was packed full of parents and families waiting to see if their children had survived the shooting. As their loved ones waited, the children were marched across the stage as their name was called--in which were greeted with screams of joy and were then able to leave the building with their families. "And to watch that crowd begin to dwindle slowly after bus after bus after bus had come and then to be told there was one bus left--and I don't think I'll ever again in my life have that kind of experience to hear the announcement, "There's only one bus left."--to me, that was the epitome of the horror that I personally felt...and feeling a mixture of anticipation, of hope, and yet of deep, deep dread that I may never see my daughter alive again," Scott related to the attendees.
