TALES FROM THE WEST TEXAS DUST

TEXAS ARTISTS SERIES: AN INTERVIEW WITH THE SOUTHERN BACKTONES (PART II)

We continue our interesting e-mail conversation from last week with the Southern Backtones:

101: How did you ever get started in the business? And how did you hook up with a label like Pinche Flojo?

Mykel: We got started like most musicians, I guess... You do what you love and kinda get thrown into it!

Hank: Pinche Flojo is based out of Houston. We admired their work and dedication to the underground music scene... I guess the feeling was mutual!

101: Now, tell me OVERALL about the things that you're most proud of in your career so far. Also, significant memories that stick out in your mind? Low points? Funny mishaps, tidbits, and stuff that might reveal you to our readers as the men you truly are?

Hank: It's great to conjure something up like the Backtones...to pull something out of thin air that never existed before, especially the songs.

Mykel: Memories, low points, mishaps... if we could only tell. We've got so much of that stuff crammed in our pockets, we need suspenders!

Let's see... there was the time Hank almost got his ass kicked in College Station by one HUGE fat redneck girl. Or when Hank [expletive deleted] his pants on stage in New Orleans. And the time Hank's girlfriend busted 2 beer bottles over his head!

Hank: Yeah, yeah, yeah! How about the time Myke barfed all over the stage at the Ale House. Or the 2 months Myke couldn't bend his knee because he slid his bike going 70 down Allen Parkway. Not to mention the time he accidently lit that girl's hair on fire in Amarillo.

101: I want you to now look into the crystal ball of your mind for a moment and look at where you might be 5, 10, 20 years down the road. What do you feel the future holds for each of you individually and for the Backtones as a whole? Where does the trail head for ya'll in general?

Hank: In five years, we'll have a great tour bus with a handy little elevator that lifts Myke's wheel chair into the bus.

Mykel: In five years, The Backtones will be hiding from bill collectors due to the outstanding debts Hank owes from hearing aid research.

101: If each of you wanted to say something in particular to both your current fans and also potential fans (as well as other people that you might wish to address), what would each of you like to say here while you have the chance? What would you like to tell them?
