TALES FROM THE WEST TEXAS DUST
THANKSGIVING DAY EVENT SPECIAL: COY'S LONE STAR WEB GUIDE TO A TEXAS-STYLE THANKSGIVING "We give thanks for..."--we seem to hear those words a lot during this time of year. But it's hard to have Thanksgiving while you're online, right? WRONG!! Not when you can check out these sites I just happened to find the other day on Yahoo (THE official search engine of this forum)! If you're looking for ways to make this a very special Turkey Day online TEXAS STYLE--well then, mi amigo/amiga--ya'll have come to the right place. Check these out and try these links on for size!! Oh--you tell me that you haven't the faintest idea about what Thanksgiving in Texas and in the rest of the U.S. is? Confused about its history and origins? Let me then steer you towards a Dallas museum site called Thanksgiving Square [ http://www.thanksgiving.org ] in which you can find out about the Square's mission and history, check out their calendar of events, get some info on their tours and programs, and even check out their online gift shop--and maybe going there might clarify things for you a little. Okay--now you know the history. But you're looking for ways to where you can send special cards to friends and family online on this special day? You might wish to stop http://members.tripod.com/Samdo/thanksgi... and check out their many samples of background sets available for downloading. Or you can use http://www.lockon.com/postcards/holidays... to find some very unique and interesting Texas-style postcards. (I especially like the one with the red peppers on it.) Let's see--Thanksgiving cards sent? CHECK! Now, we need to kill a little time before the Aggie/Longhorn football game and something else important that comes later. What can we do to make our time useful and constructive to put us in the proper mood for Turkey Day? You might want to read an article that Sherman Herald-Democrat columnist Gary Carter wrote about today at http://reporternews.com/texas/thank1126.... Mr. Carter does provide a little bit of an incisive and unique commentary on the overemphasis of Christmas at the expense of Thanksgiving as a sacrifice to what he calls "the gods of commerce". (And if you don't like what he says, then you might at least find a way to use the computer printout as stuffing for your turkey.) After you're finished reading that, you can then go to http://www.texasalmanac.com/texasholiday... and read the detailed list of symbols and holidays that are observed here in the Lone Star State. (You can also do that after the ball game, if you wanted to--I guess; it's your choice.) Go To Page: 1 2
