Famed Theme Park Going Strong

Any vacation in the Dallas-Fort Worth area should include a day or two set aside to visit the state’s most famous theme park, Six Flags Over Texas. Located in Arlington, a city midway between Dallas and Fort Worth, Six Flags Over Texas has entertained multiple generations of visitors. The park celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2001.

Though now in its 41st year of operation, there’s nothing antiquated about Six Flags Over Texas. The park continuously adds new shows and attractions. And rides that have been there since its debut are kept looking brand new and running smoothly in optimum operating condition.

In December and early January, Six Flags celebrates the season with Holiday in the Park. Kids can slide down a snow hill, have their pictures taken with Santa Claus and catch a snowflake during the Jolly Holiday show that closes each day’s activities. The entire family will enjoy the Wild West Christmas Show at the Crazy Horse Saloon. And the seasonal attractions are bonuses added to the park’s usual array of shows and rides.

Roller coasters are a prime attraction at Six Flags Over Texas, and there are plenty of them. There’s the Shock Wave advertised as the world’s first roller coaster with back-to-back vertical loops. The Titan, a steel coaster, rises 255 feet above ground and reaches speeds of up to 85 miles per hour. The Flashback, another steel coaster, turns riders upside down six times – three times going forward and three times going backward. The Texas Giant rises 14 stories into the sky and hits a top speed of 62 mph. It has been voted the No. 1 wooden roller coaster in the world.

Height restrictions will keep small children off some of the roller coasters, but there are plenty of other rides to entertain them. Everyone in the family will enjoy riding to the top of the oil derrick where you’ll have spectacular views of the skylines of both Dallas and Fort Worth. Smaller children won’t want to leave a section of the park called Looney Tunes USA. There they’ll enjoy such rides as Sylvester & Tweety’s State Fair-Is Wheel, Bugs Bunny’s Spirit of St. Louie and Elmer Fudd’s “America The Beautiful” Railway.

When planning a trip to Six Flags Over Texas, you’ll want to consider setting aside two days for your visit. Even if you’re there from opening to closing, there’s more to see and do than can be covered in a single day. And a two-day pass costs only a few dollars more than a ticket for one day’s visit. It’s a bargain you shouldn’t pass up.
