New Museum Bringing Visitors to Austin

Besides exhibits, the museum houses an IMAX theater, the Spirit of Texas Theater and the Revolution Theater. Admission to the Revolution Theater is included in general admission to the exhibits. It shows “Revolution!” which tells the story of the Texas Revolution from the perspective of Juan Seguin, the famed Tejano leader who fought for Texas independence. His exploits included serving as one of the last couriers to leave the Alamo and commanding a cavalry unit at the battle of San Jacinto where Mexico’s General Santa Anna was defeated.

Shown at the Spirit of Texas Theater is “The Star of Destiny” which is described as taking “the audience on an epic journey through the history of Texas.” At the IMAX Theatre, two features currently are being shown, “Gold Fever” which “takes audiences to exotic locations around the world in search of this precious metal” and “Extreme” which “brings all the danger and daring of extreme sports to life on the giant screen.” “Extreme” will be replaced on Nov. 17 by a new IMAX feature, “Cyberworld 3D.”

The IMAX and Spirit theaters are not included in general admission tickets. General admission to the exhibits is free for anyone 18 or younger. Adult tickets are $5, and senior citizens’ general admission is $4.25. IMAX prices are $6.50 for adults, $5.50 for seniors and $4.50 for those under 18. Spirit Theater prices are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3.50 for young people. Combination prices (including the exhibits and both theaters) are $12.50 for adults, $10 for seniors and $6 for those younger than 18.

The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Holiday closures are limited to Christmas, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Easter. It’s located at the corner of North Congress Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in the area between the University of Texas and the State Capitol. Parking is available in an underground garage at the museum which charges $8 per day; however, museum visitors can get a voucher for $5 off the parking charge by making a purchase of $5 or more at the museum.
