A Pivotal Moment in the History of Humanity
Listening obsessively to the incessant analysis of the situation and predictions of future actions on the news media, I was struck by the dignity, calm and eminent wisdom of Hanan Ashrawi. Let us assemble a council of people of her stature and enter on a period of reflection, not of action. Let us show those who fear and despise the west for our post-war policies towards those parts of the world we think we have a right to police that we understand that this a watershed in human history.
It is indeed a point of no return, but there is a fork in the path ahead. The route of retaliation and revenge will lead to the unleashing of horrors we dare not contemplate. The other, the route of mutual understanding, could lead to a new world order in which the words freedom and justice become common currency and not just the prerogative of the rich and powerful.
