Implications for the classroom

Learners need to be aware that:

a) meaning depends on sentence structure as well the choice of words

b) phonological features - especially stress and intonation contribute systematically to meaning

c) just as words require their immediate context in order to yield their full meaning, so the information in sentences is dependent on the wider context to be fully understood.
