Exams measuring general achievement
It is a motivating experience to pass an examination that validates general achievement in language studies. If the candidate is looking for a certificate that testifies to the fact that a syllabus has been studied and that the course of study has culminated in an exam, then the UCLES suite of exams, ranging from elementary to advanced, and testing all the language skills, is a strong option. Pass/fail exams are also offered by UODLE. However, it is usually necessary to follow a course of guided study to achieve success in these exams. Some of these exams at the higher levels are acceptable to British universities instead of IELTS. Exams in spoken English
For many learners, the achievement of fluency is the main aim and there are several possibilities for taking spoken English exams at the appropriate levels. Trinity College, London, has a range of
graded spoken exams that are held interview-style. UODLE runs the ARELS Oral exams, which are recorded on to audio cassette. The LCCIEB has spoken exams for both business English and tourism.
There is an excellent descriptive guide, with contact addresses, to the main exams in the ESL field at http://www.GoUk.com.
