English Language Examinations

English language learners wishing to take a public examination as part of their course of study should think very carefully about which exam is appropriate to their needs. If they choose well, they should find that the preparation and experience of taking the exam has a beneficial effect on their learning. If they make the wrong choice, however, and have a disappointing result, then a lot of damage could be done to their confidence and self-esteem.

Exams for university entrance

Vast numbers of students need to take an exam to prove to university departments that they are capable of following a course of academic or vocational study. For students wishing to enter a university department in the USA, the exam to prepare for is the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). This computerised test examines Listening, Grammar, Reading and Writing and is an objective test with multiple choice answers. Students should contact the university of their choice to find out what score is needed. As this test gives the learner a reading of their level, there is no risk of failing the exam and it can be retaken as often as needed for the candidate to improve his or her score.

For British, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand universities, TOEFL will probably be accepted if the candidate can also provide evidence of spoken fluency. However, the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) would be a better bet. The test includes spoken English as well as reading writing and listening. It has 9 bands of competence and university usually ask for a score in the band 6.0 - 7.0, but students should check first. As with TOEFL, it taken be taken again if the required score is not reached.

Exams related to work

For learners working, or wishing to work, in a specific field, it could be useful to take an exam that shows competence in the chosen area. The broadest based exam of this type is the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication). This test consists of 200 multiple choice questions and gives a reading of the candidate's level, thus avoiding the distinction between passing and failure. It is widely recognized in international business. Other exams in business and commercial English are offered by UCLES (University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate), LCCIEB (London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Examinations Board), and UODLE University of Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations).
