Tips for the Recreational Tennis PlayerDo you play the same opponent week in and week out? Are you looking to improve your game? Want to meet new people and partners? Get involved in a tennis league. League tennis is comprised of teams of players at the same age group and/or skill level. Since tennis is an individual sport, this is a great opportunity for players to participate as part of a team. League tennis offers a friendly and competitive environment for players of the same ability. Depending on the league, players participate in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Generally, one player will compete in only one event per match, but is eligible to play in another event at a different match. Some leagues will field only men's or women's doubles, while others are co-ed with singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The United States Tennis Association organizes Adult, Senior and Mixed leagues throughout the year for all ages and ability levels. More than 300,000 players compete in singles or doubles for their team, beginning at the local level. Teams advance through area and sectional playoffs, on their way to the national championship event. You will also find competition with World Team Tennis leagues for Professionals, Adults, Juniors and College players. Marquee players in the Pro League include the Williams sisters, Mary Pierce, Jim Courier, Monica Seles and Patrick McEnroe. The Recreational League for adults is comprised of co-ed teams competing in over 500 communities across the country. Regional playoffs are held throughout the year in Florida, Nevada, Indiana, Arizona and Delaware with the national championship in Florida. The Collegiate Championships and Junior Nationals follow the same format. Additional leagues may be formed at the local level at Park & Rec departments or Community Tennis Associations. In addition, certain clubs may promote league tennis with special events for adults and juniors that are open to the public. Join a tennis league - you'll be glad you did, and your game will improve too.
