2001/2 TV Season in Review

A look at what I consider to be some of the surprises and disappointments of the TV season so far this year. Who am I kidding? Actually, there were no surprise hits. So instead of categorizing the shows, I'll just come right out and tell you what I think.

The Ellen Show -- Now Mondays at 8:30 P.M./7:30C on CBS (CH -- Canada)

Ellen DeGeneres plays an L. A. businesswoman who returns to her hometown to become a counselor at her old high school. To be quite honest, I wasn't really expecting much from this show. But I was pleasantly surprised to actually find myself laughing out loud. Not only this show have extremely talented cast (Martin Moll and Cloris Leachman, just to name a couple) but writing is pretty solid. Also, DeGeneres isn't afraid to push the envelope with her sense of humor. There's a funny scene where Ellen is hanging a picture of Melissa Ethridge on her wall, only to find it hanging crooked. Ellen then says that it doesn't matter because she was never "straight" anyway.

Smallville -- Tuesdays at 9 P.M./8C on the WB

This series could be best described as a Superman prequel. It follows the adventures of a very young Clark Kent as he grows up in his Kansas home town and comes to realize that he has super powers. I'm reluctant to call this show a disappointment because the writing isn't all that bad. But there are some continuity problems. For example, in Smallville we're expected to believe that Clark Kent grew up as a football player. Am I to believe that the nerd at The Daily Planet was a high school jock? The Clark Kent of Smallville has nothing to do with the Clark Kent my generation grew up with.

Star Trek: Enterprise -- Wednesdays at 8/7C on UPN (also Sundays at 8 P.M. E.T. on Space -- Canada)

This is a prequel to the original Star Trek television series and is about the very first Enterprise to travel great distances into outer space. However someone should remind the writers that they're writing for Star Trek and not for Baywatch. The female crew member, T'Pol, who is a Vulcan, is dressed like a sex kitten. The pilot includes a scene where the captain (Scott Bakula) is rubbing lotion over her half naked body. But if you can overlook the problems with the T'Pol character, Enterprise is just as good as any other Star Trek series. Even the original Captain Kirk was portrayed as a ladies man. It is also quite noraml for a new Star Trek series to need a little time to find its footing.
