Fall TV Part II: The Good, The Bad and The Promising

© Steve Hatton

Considering the immense popularity of my fall television review article, along with the fact that September is finally here, I thought it would be a good idea to revisit some of the new TV prospects in greater detail. I've divided the shows into three categories: The Good, The Bad and The Promising. Now I don't actually have enough clout in the industry to actually watch the new shows ahead of time, so these predictions are based to a large extent on what other TV critics and media insiders seem to think but they are also slightly based on what I like to call my sixth sense for TV trends.

The Good:

Undeclared -- Tuesdays at 8:30 P.M./7:30C on Fox. Starts September 18th

From "Freaks and Geeks" executive producer Judd Apatow, this show is described as the story of a dork out to make a fresh new start now that he is a college freshman. Unfortunately, his dad keeps popping up and ruining things. While the underrated "Freaks and Geeks" never really had much success, "Undeclared" is probably the only good show on the Fox fall line-up with enough potential to become a hit.

Maybe I'm Adopted -- Fridays at 8:30 P.M./7:30C on the WB

The show revolves around a 15-year-old girl named Molly Stage who feels like she is living with a family of freaks. The family is headed by a very frugal mother played by Julia Sweeney of "Saturday Night Live" and a dad obsessed with soccer played by Fred Willard (Best In Show). This show is already a hit with many critics and the cast does have plenty of acting talent to make it work, even though the premise does sound like as if they are trying to ride on the heels of "Malcolm In The Middle."

A recap of some of the other good new shows mentioned previously would include "Alias," "Thieves" and "Philly," all of which will be on ABC.

The Bad:

The Bernie Mac Show -- Wednesdays 9:30 P.M./8:30C on Fox. Starts November 7th

Bernie Mac stars as himself in this sitcom about an uncle who ends up looking after his sister's children, who quickly realize that uncle Bernie is a lot tougher than he seems when it comes to enforcing the rules. "Mi casa es mi casa. Got it?" says Bernie Mac. Remember that line because it could be the funniest quote from the whole series. The bottom line is that "The Bernie Mac Show" doesn't offer us anything original that we haven't already seen. Can you say "Cosby rip-off?"

I'm a diehard Seinfeld fan and miss it terribly. There has been nothing that has even come close since the show retired.

I don't know about you, but I have my fingers crossed for Jason Alexander's ...
