ABC Expects Super Ratings on Super Bowl Sunday

The Super Bowl is traditionally the highest rated television event of the year and this year should be no exception. Even non-sports fans tune in to the game which has become almost as much of a cultural happening as it has a sporting event.

ABC is pulling out all the stops in its coverage of the game and will be using as many as 30 cameras to record every angle. Al Michaels and John Madden are on hand to call the game in San Diego between the AFC Champion Oakland Raiders and the NFC Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In addition, Chris Berman will serve as pregame, halftime and postgame host. He will be joined by Super Bowl XXIX MVP Steve Young of the San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants defensive end MichaelStrahan and Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick. ABC Sports' Mike Tirico will host the analyst set from the USS Preble.

Joining them will be Hall of Famers Dan Fouts (San Diego Chargers), Bob Griese (Miami Dolphins) and Joe Thiesmann (Washington Redskins). Hall of Famer Lynn Swann (Pittsburgh Steelers), Monday Night Football sideline reporter Melissa Stark, ESPN's Andrea Kremer, 14-year-old sportscaster Grant Paulsen and comedian Jimmy Kimmel will serve as reporters.

Members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only team in NFL history to go through an entire season undefeated, will be on hand to participate in the opening coin toss. The Dixie Chicks will perform the national anthem and country/pop superstar Shania Twain will provide the halftime entertainment.

Commercial time is selling for a reported $2 million for thirty seconds. The production values for these commericals are usually equally as high. Sometimes the commercials are even more entertaining than the game itself.

"Alias" revealed: This year the coveted post Super Bowl time slot goes to "Alias." The spy series starring Jennifer Garner is, in my humble opinion, the best program on television. Ratings have been less than stellar, however. If you haven't seen the series yet, I urge you to give it a try. Here is the plot synopsis for the special episode.

"Phase One," (airing at approximately 10:15e/9:15c/7:15p) Sydney and Jack are confronted by the new director of SD-6 (Rutger Hauer) who replaces a missing Sloane, whose whereabouts - and intentions - are unknown. Meanwhile, romantic sparks begin to fly between Francie and Will.

This week in television history: January 30, 1977 marks the debut of "Lanigan's Rabbi." Part of the famed "NBC Mystery Movie" series, the program starred Art Carney as a crime-solving Rabbi and was based on the books by Harry Kemelman. The series ended on July 31, 1977.
