The life and death of a real-life American solider is spotlighted on Monday’s episode of “7th Heaven.” Series creator Brenda Hampton told the Los Angeles Times, “Those people who have volunteered to go over and who volunteer in our armed services, sometimes their deaths don’t seem real. They become news reports that we hear in passing.”

Hampton decided to profile Marine Staff Sgt. Dwight J. Morgan, a 24-year-old helicopter mechanic killed in a crash in Afghanistan. Finding a way to honor those serving in the armed forces today was important yet challenging to Hampton. “I randomly chose one person and decided it would be better to honor one then none,” she said.

In the story, 11 year-old Ruthie Camden (Mackenzie Rosman) becomes acquainted with a solider serving in Afghanistan through an e-mail correspondence project at school. Ruthie and her family, and thus viewers, get to know real-life details of Sgt. Morgan’s life and death.

Morgan’s family and a real Marine honor guard participate in an on-screen memorial service for Morgan that the Camden family attends. The names of all American personnel killed while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom will be scrolled on screen during the closing of the special “7th Heaven” episode.

This special episode of “7th Heaven” airs Monday, May 6 at 8 p.m. PST/EST on The WB. Check your local listings for the WB affiliate in your area.
