Four New Series Ease Summer Blahs

News and notes from the world of television...

Two series previously canceled at the end of last season have been given new life. THE SENTINEL on UPN, and THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN on CBS, will both be brought back as midseason replacements.

UPN and CBS were flooded with cards and letters from fans protesting the cancellations. In the case of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, fans created their own web page to help them in their letter writing campaign to save the show. It is proof that the networks do listen to viewer opinion, provided it is loud enough...

Summer is traditionally re-run season but there arefour new television series making their debut. All of them are on cable television.

OH YEAH! CARTOONS! debuted on July 19th on the Nickelodeon cable network. The series features three new six-minute cartoons each week. Fred Seibert, creator of the series, told TV GUIDE, "We call it a cartoon laboratory because...we¹re conjuring up all the great new cartoons of the future."

THE SUPER AVENTURE TEAM debuts Thrusday evening at 10:30 p.m. (PST) on MTV. This tongue-in-cheek series features a group of marionettes (puppets) who live on a spacestation. Fans of the classic '60s television series THE THUNDERBIRDS may especially enjoy this series.

The USA Network offers viewers two new series designed to increase their Saturday night viewership. One, THE NET, is based on the feature film of the same. The other, SINS OF THE CITY, is a television staple, a private detective series.

Brooke Langton (MELROSE PLACE) steps into the role of Angela Bennett. (Sandra Bullock played the role in the film version of THE NET.) Bennett is a computer wizard who has her identity stolen from her by an evil organization called The Praetorian Guard. The series will focus on Bennett¹s attempt to get her identity back and warn everyone of the dangers of The Praetorian Guard.

Co-starring in the series are Joseph Bottoms as the bad guy and Tim Curry as the voice of her mysterious computer ally. Patrick Hasbrough of 21 JUMP STREET fame is producing. He promises the series will be much like THE FUGITIVE as it will focus on the many interesting people that Bennett meets each week.

SINS OF THE CITY is the story of an "ethically challenged" ex-cop turned private investigator. Australian actor Vince Karol stars as private eye Marcus Graham. Each week Graham tries to unravel the "sin behind the crime." The series is set in Miami.
