The television industry lost two true giants this week with the passing of
Milton Berle and Sylvester "Pat" Weaver. Berle's success was in front of the
camera while Weaver's was behind the camera.
Berle, who passed away at age 93, had one of the most distinguished careers in show business history. His career ran the gamut from vaudeville to nightclubs and radio, motion pictures and television. It was in television where Berle enjoyed his greatest success, however, earning the nickname "Mr. Television." Berle's television career began in the very early days of television. He appeared in several series over the years but the most popular was "The Milton Berle Show," sometimes known as "Texaco Star Theater," which began in 1948. At the time his show started there were very few television sets in American living rooms. The popularity of Berles show was so great that it was said many people actually went out and bought their first television set just to be able to watch Milton Berle. Berle wasnt always well liked by everybody, however. He had a reputation for being a perfectionist and could be very moody. His critics often said he stole many of his jokes from other comedians. Despite the criticism, however, nobody can deny his great comedic talent or the contributions he made to American television. Sylvester "Pat" Weaver was a radio and television executive in the early days of both mediums. He is regarded as being one of the best and most creative executives in the history of television. During his days at NBC he came up with the concept of both "The Today" and "The Tonight Show" for NBC. Many people dont realize it today but there was a time when most television stations shut down at night and offered no programming. Most executives didnt think people would stay up late at night to watch television. Though it is considered a staple today, "The Tonight Show" was a radical concept when it first debuted in 1954. Both "The Today Show" and "The Tonight Show" have gone on to make literally billions of dollars for NBC over the years. One other note, Weaver is also the father of actress Sygourney Weaver ("Alien").
