February is Black History Month and the Showtime pay cable network is offering several programs of note. Each features African-Americans in prominent roles in front of and behind the camera. Here is a sampling:
"Keep the Faith, Baby" stars Harry Lennix ("Titus") and Vanessa Williams ("Chicago Hope"). This true-life drama tells the story of legendary and controversial New York congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Congressman Powell was loved by his constituents in Harlem but made many enemies in Washington, D.C. "Keep the Faith, Baby" premieres on February 17 at 8 p.m., ET/PT. "10,000 Black Men Named George" stars Andre Braugher ("Homicide: Life On the Streets"), Charles S. Dutton ("Roc") and Mario Van Peebles ("New Jack City"). The film tells the story of Asa Phillip Randolph, an early champion of the Civil Rights movement. Randolph organized the men working as Pullman car porters on the nation's passenger trains. Enduring years of violence and coercion, Randolph was ultimately successful in getting the Pullman Company to sign the first ever union contract between a major American corporation and a union of black workers. The film premieres on February 24 at 8 p.m., ET/PT. "The Red Sneakers" stars noted actor/dancer Gregory Hines who is also making his directorial debut. The film tells the story of high school student Reggie Reynolds who believes all of his dreams will come true after a mysterious man presents him with a pair of red sneakers. Reynolds believes these shoes will transform him into a basketball sensation. The film premieres on February 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Showtime will also present the "Black Filmmaker Showcase featuring finalists for this year's showcase grant award. "Flight of the Bumblebee," the winning entry in the contest, will also be shown. Included among the finalists are "Marriage and Margaret Cooper," "Bliss," "Gabrielle," "We Are Not Vanishing" and Milk and Honey." This filmmaker showcase airs on February 6 at 7:30 p.m., ET/PT. THIS WEEK IN TELEVISION HISTORY: February 9, 1977 marks the debut of THE LIFE AND TIMES OF GRIZZLY ADAMS on NBC-TV. Starring Dan Haggerty and Denver Pyle, the series was set in the late 1800s. It told the story of mountain man Grizzly Adams and his peaceful existence with nature. The series was based on the theatrical release of the same name. It ended on July 26, 1978.
