The newest of the broadcast networks, UPN and the WB have announced their fall television schedules. This year saw many changes for the so-called "weblets." Going into the season, UPN had the better ratings of the two.
Shows like BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and DAWSON'S CREEK, however, have become cult hits and have pushed the WB ahead of UPN. UPN's biggest hit series now is STAR TREK: VOYAGER and it is the least popular of the four STAR TREK series which have been on the air.
UPN has undergone changes behind the scenes as well. While they aren't totally abandoning their strategy of going after the urban audience, they are expanding the types of programming they are offering viewers. Two of their new shows, in fact, are set in the 19th century. They are even adding a weekly science fiction movie night. (More on that later.) The WB, on the other hand, is in much the same position FOX was a few years ago. With a few hits under their belt, they are making some bold programming moves to challenge the other networks. Perhaps their boldest move of the season is moving their teen-angst drama DAWSON'S CREEK to Wednesday night in an attempt to challenge FOX's aging hit series BEVERLY HILLS, 90210. Here are the new fall series for UPN and the WB. Returning series for UPN are: MALCOM AND EDDIE, MOESHA, CLUELESS, STAR TREK: VOYAGER and THE LOVE BOAT. Their new series are: LEGACY GUYS LIKE US MERCY POINT DIRESTA THE SECRET LIFE OF DESMOND PFEIFFER
