The Nominees for The People's Choice Awards Are Out

© F. Colin Kingston

There are an abundance of awards shows on television. One of the most popular is "The People's Choice Awards." The show debuted in 1975 on CBS and remains one of the few ways that American television viewers and filmgoers can have a say in honoring their favorites. Thanks to the Internet, fans can now cast their votes online. (More on that shortly.)

The nominees for the "28th Annual People's Choice Awards" are out. I'm fascinated almost as much by the shows that got left out of the ballot almost as much as I am by the ones that made it. "NYPD Blue," for instance, one of the best dramas in the history of television, isn't on the ballot this year. "Will and Grace" isn't on the listing for favorite comedy series either.

Below is a listing of some of the television-related nominees. (Shameless lobbying time, I'm casting my vote for "Alias" for favorite new television drama.) The winners will be announced when the show airs on CBS on Sunday, January 13th at 8 p.m.

Favorite New Television Dramatic Series Alias Crossing Jordan Law & Order: Criminal Intent

Favorite Television Dramatic Series ER Law and Order The West Wing

Favorite New Television Comedy Series The Ellen Show My Wife and Kids Scrubs

Favorite Television Comedy Series Everybody Loves Raymond Frasier Friends

News and notes from the world of television:

"Thieves" steels away into the night:Thieves wasn't able to steel any viewers away enough viewers from the major networks so ABC is pulling the plug. If you planned on catching an episode of the series but haven't yet, you'd better hurry. The show will have its last airing soon.

"The Invisible Man" is disappearing: The Sci-Fi Channel is canceling their quirky series "The Invisible Man." According to AC Neilsen, the show is only averaging a 1.8 on the Sci-Fi Channel and in syndication as well. Too bad as the show was fun to watch.

Almost anything is possible in television: Struggling television writers and creative types take note. Just about any premise is possible if you have an established track record. "Broadcasting Magazine" reports that UPN has ordered a new pilot from David Milch, the creator of "NYPD Blue." The series is about a street hustler who befriends and outerspace alien. (honest)

Carol Burnett scores big for CBS: The recent reunion/clip show featuring members of the classic "Carol Burnett Show" garnered terrific numbers for CBS. The AC Neilsen company estimates that 30 million viewers tuned in to the special which was broadcast on November 26th.
