Wolf Lake May Be Killed Off By Difficult Timeslot

One of the best things about this job is that I receive preview cassette copies of various television programs. It allows me to inform you about shows before they actually air on television. This week we offer a sneak peek at the new CBS series "Wolf Lake." Next week we will preview two other new CBS series, "The Agency" and "The Guardian."

"Wolf Lake" stars Lou Diamond Phillips ("La Bamba") as Seattle cop Noah Cassidy. The premiere episode finds Cassidy going in search of his missing fiancée who vanished just outside of Cassidy's apartment. A mysterious phone call brings him to "Wolf Lake" and helps set the premise for the series.

Cassidy soon discovers that is an unwanted visitor in the small mountain town. Many of the residents dislike the fact that he is asking questions about his missing fiancée. Like many shows of this type, most people in the town are not what they seem to be. It is clear they are hiding a secret of some sort, but Cassidy is unable to determine just what that secret is.

A CBS press release says that the town is infested with a mysterious pack of wolves that can turn into human form - a sort of reversal on the old "Wolf Man" theme. There is also a fight for leadership of the wolf pack going on and that makes for some dangerous events going on around town.

The cast includes such talented actors as Tim Matheson ("Animal House") as town Sheriff Jack Kohanek; Sharon Lawrence ("NYPD Blue) as Vivian Cates, wife of one of the most powerful men in town; and Scott Bairstow ("Lonesome Dove: The Series") as Tyler Creed, a young resident of the town, among others.

"Wolf Pack" seems to be a combination of the television series "Twin Peaks" and the horror-movie "Lost Boys," except that the subject matter involves wolves, not vampires. Many of the characters are as quirky as those in "Twin Peaks" and that promises to be the most interesting part of this series.

"Wolf Pack" is not typical of the type of series that usually airs on CBS. The premiere has some suggestive violence of wolf attacks. It also has a partial nude scene early in the premiere episode during a scene in which Cassidy and his fiancée making love. The series is rated TV14-SV and CBS mentions that "viewer discretion is advised."

It is always hard to judge a series based on only one episode. "Wolf Pack" does have some intriguing characters and the premise is unusual. The premiere episode fails to properly introduce all of the characters as to their relationships to one another, however.
