Stooges, Looney Toons, and More

Though they never actually had a prime time television series of their own, The Three Stooges were definitely television stars. Thankfully, their theatrical shorts were perfectly suited for television. I say thankfully because television is where I first discovered the Stooges. So successful were the Stooges on the small screen that they even had their own cartoon series for a time.

Fans of The Three Stooges have three ways to celebrate their love for the comedy team: Attend the First Annual West Coast Stooge convention, join the official fan club, or shop at the official Three Stooges store.

The first annual West Coast Stooge Convention will take place on August 21-23, 1998 in Burbank, California. Among the many planned activities are: real live pie fights, a Stooge theater featuring never before seen Stooge footage, trivia contests, sound effects demonstrations, Three Stooges impersonators, a dealers room, and a display of Stooge memorabilia.

Radio and television personality Gary Owens will host the grand opening ceremonies. Other invited celebrities include: Leonard Maltin, Adam West and Diana Darrin. Authors, celebrities, and heirs to all six Stooges will be on hand for autographs as well.

Fans of The Three Stooges are also invited to become a ³Knucklehead², the name of the official Stooge fan club. The club is sanctioned by Comedy III Productions, Inc., the Three Stooges Production Company founded by Larry, Moe and Curly-Joe in 1959.

To become a Knucklehead and obtain a one-year membership, send $20 to: Comedy III Productions, Inc., P.O. Box 10666, Glendale, CA 91209-3666 or visit their web site at www.threestooges.com. Convention membership prices for fan club members are $54 for 3 days. One day passes are $20 for fan club members. Non-fan club convention prices are $65 for 3 days, $25 for a one day pass. For further convention information, call 1 888 U STOOGE.

Stooge memorabilia is available year-round at Knuckleheads, a store which features a variety of Stooge and Hollywood memorabilia. They are located at 2225 Glendale Galleria, Glendale, CA 91202. (818) 241-5682.

Another television and motion picture comedy team, Tweetie and Sylvester of Looney Toon fame, have been honored with a postage stamp recently put out by the United States Postal Service. "The Postal Service salutes the important role animated heroes and characters play in America's great traditions of humor and entertainment," said Postal Service Chief Operating Officer William Henderson, who dedicated the stamp.

"As a key stamp in the 1998 commemorative program, the Sylvester & Tweetie stamp is sure to be a hit with young people and will help encourage them to enjoy the educational hobby of stamp collecting." Also attending the ceremony was Warner Bros. animation director Chuck Jones.
