To paraphrase Charles Dickens, it is the best of times and it is the worst of times for television viewers. It is the best of times because all of our favorite shows are having season ending episodes.
It is the worst of times because, after this month, the vast majority of television series will go into reruns until the fall. Some television series will be canceled. Some of those will end up in rerun heaven and on home video. Still others will disappear all together. Here is a sampling of some upcoming television series which will broadcast their season ending episodes the week of May 12 - 18th. Happy viewing. Tuesday, May 12th The surprising WB cult hit BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (8 p.m., PST) begins a two-part season ending episode which features Buffy setting out to destroy Angel. Wednesday, May 13th ABC-TV's DHARMA AND GREG (8 p.m., PST), their only real new hit, ends its first season with an episode which features the couple having sex in a public place. No doubt the incident will be referred to and not actually seen. This is, after all, broadcast television and not cable. The controversial ABC-TV series ELLEN (9 p.m., PST) ends its five year run with a whole slew of guest stars including Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Aniston and Phil Donahue. (More on the ending of this series later on in this column). Thursday, May 14th MTV's claymation series CELEBRITY DEATH MATCH (7:30 p.m. PST) features all new wrestling bouts between claymation versions of various celebrities. Think of it as a combination of art (claymation) and THE JERRY SPRINGER SHOW. The celebrity claymation opponents this week include Monica Lewinsky vs. Hillary Clinton, Mariah Carey vs. Jim Carey, and Jerry Seinfeld vs. Tim Allen. Also scheduled to make claymation guest appearances are President Clinton, Gennifer Flowers and the cast of NBC-TV1s SEINFELD. Unless you1ve been living in a cave this past year, you are no doubt already aware that May 14th marks the last new of NBC-TV1s SEINFELD (9 p.m., PST). Originally scheduled to run an hour in length, the episode has now been extended another 15 minutes. Time will tell if Jerry Seinfeld and the gang can top the ratings for the famous "WHO SHOT JR?" episode of DALLAS. That particular episode of the classic CBS-TV series (seen on reruns on TNT) remains the most watched single episode of a regularly scheduled program in television history. (For the record, I1m predicting that the final episode of SEINFELD will break the record.)
